While in the process of being laid off from a job working for the state, Erika T. found out she and her husband was expecting their first baby! Before her final date of employment she was put on disability by her doctor due to complications with the pregnancy.

The family faced hard times, looking for an affordable place for their growing family, all while she was coping with the stress of losing a great job. The stress was taking a big toll on her health.

The family found an apartment at Hacienda Townhomes “Things had begun to get back on the right track” said Erika, “Hacienda was within our budget and the community was family oriented.

Almost immediately, Erika started attending the on-site Family Learning Center programs and was encouraged by the Resident Coordinator to go back to school. Erika enrolled in an online associates program at the University of Phoenix.

Since having her baby and enrolling into college, Erika obtained her Associates Degree in Psychology and a week after graduating, she interviewed and was offered a position with the non-profit Easter Seal as a Like Skills Coach, working with adults with developmental disabilities.

After speaking with the Resident Coordinator about her organization, Erika struck a partnership with the Family Learning Center “Having the group help out at my community center has brought me so much pride” says Erika. “We are very pleased with our partnership”, says Cassandra the Center’s Resident Coordinator.”

Erika is continuing her education and is set to complete her Bachelor’s Degree in October 2015. She plans to continue until receiving her doctorate in Industrial/Organizational Psychology.
